A Luer needle holder is a type of fitting that is used in medical and laboratory instruments to connect a needle to a syringe or other device. Luer fittings come in two varieties:
Luer lock
A more secure fitting where the needle is twisted onto the tip and locked in place. This prevents the needle from being accidentally removed or knocked off, and ensures that no liquids leak. Luer lock syringes are ideal for puncturing septa in samples that are sensitive to air.
Luer slip
A quicker fitting where the syringe tip is pushed into the needle hub. Luer slip syringes are used for measuring liquids for dilution or mixtures.
Luer fittings are part of a standardized system of small-scale fluid fittings called the Luer taper.
