A coagulation tube, also known as a citrate tube, is used to perform coagulation studies. The tube contains sodium citrate as an anticoagulant to temporarily prevent blood from clotting.
- Color
In accordance with international standards, coagulation tubes have a light blue cap.
- Blood-to-anticoagulant ratio
The ratio of blood to anticoagulant in a coagulation tube should be 9:1. If the tube isn't filled enough, the ratio will be lower, which could affect the test results.
- Order of draw
When drawing blood for coagulation tests, the blue-top tube should be drawn before other tubes.
- Mixing
After filling the tube, it's recommended to mix the blood a few times to form plasma.
- Fill line
Some tubes have a fill line to indicate when the tube is full and the blood draw volume is correct.
- Discard tube
When using a winged blood collection set, it's recommended to draw a discard tube first. This tube should be nonadditive or a coagulation tube.
