To perform an ESR test, a blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm and placed in the ESR tube. The tube is then upright, and the distance the red blood cells fall is measured after one hour. The distance is reported in millimeters.
A faster ESR rate indicates higher levels of inflammation. This is because inflammation causes red blood cells to stick together and form clumps, which makes them sink faster.
